Make sure you look for flaws whenever you borrow a book! Otherwise, you WILL be charged for the damage you didn't make. And there are a LOT of damaged books in circulation.

If it's a pleasant day out (ie: no wind, sunny), head up to the roof. It's usually empty. Seats are terrible though and looking at your laptop screen will be a nightmare. That's the cost of privacy!
